I know, I know…another gallery of tiny things. What’s that you say? Why? Because…well…TINY THINGS! Just look at them! They’re incredible, those small creatures that inhabit the little worlds around our feet. I’m fascinated by them. And the back ache from crawling around with a camera for hours is, frankly, worth it to get a glimpse in to those little worlds.

All of these images were shot in Central Portugal, some on the quinta, some on the neighbours’ farm (vegetable bugs), some at the other neighbours’ ponds (frogs) and some in the nearby Serra de Estrela mountains (demoiselles).

There is a staggering variety of miniature life in this valley that I call home and although it’s micro in stature, it is surely mega in terms of ecological importance. I love the surprises and intrigue in discovering this richness of life and I enjoy the challenges of photographing it (if this was an Oscars speech I’d definitely be thanking organic land management and my macro lens right now). I’ve done my best to correctly identify the species photographed but if anyone spots that I’ve got it wrong anywhere, be a darling and let me know, thanks. Enjoy the small things…
